Looking forward to seeing 65 year old Darrell Scott at The Iron Horse on Wednesday. It’s a good way of starting the Jewish New Year.
Darrell grew up in the coal country of Harlan County, Kentucky. His song “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” is probably his best known. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Gary, Indiana where his dad worked in the steel mills. In the early 1980s he got a creative writing scholarship to attend Tufts University. He soon joined one of New England’s first bluegrass bands - The John Lincoln Wright Band.
After college he moved to Nashville and began writing country hits for Travis Tritt, Brad Paisley, and The Dixie Chicks. Before long he was performing solo, making albums, and winning songwriting awards like one for “Hank Williams Ghost.”
In 2011 he toured with Robert Plant’s Band of Joy for a year along with Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin, credited as performing vocals, playing guitar , mandolin, accordion, pedal, lap steel, and banjo. He and Tim O’Brien have made 3 albums together.
Here he is performing at The Country Music Hall of Fame with the late Kenny Malone, who played drums for many bands, including The Everly Brothers and Johnny Cash.
